In 1917, the Mistletoe Girl Scout Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, baked the first box of Girl Scout cookies. They sold them in their high school cafeteria as a community service project and they were a big hit, leading to the tradition of yearly Girl Scout cookie sales that we all enjoy today. But, while the Sooner State may be the Home of the Girl Scout cookie, eating too many can leave lasting damage to your teeth. Excess sugars can lead to plaque buildup, cavities, gum disease, and worse health issues if not taken care of. That’s not to say you shouldn’t enjoy a sweet treat now and then. Healthy teeth require a balance of delicious foods and daily oral care. So next time you purchase a box of Thin Mints, make sure you stock up on good toothpaste and floss too!

As an Oklahoman, traditions mean everything. From eating classic barbecue at the annual county fairs to rooting for the Oklahoma City Thunders, some things are hardwired into the brain. Just as important as those pastimes, though, is the health of your teeth and gums. Throw some antibacterial mouthwash in there too for the ultimate minty-fresh mouth. The best traditions last a lifetime—let’s make brushing and flossing one of them!

Who is Dr. Cole Johnson DDS?

Dr. Cole J. Johnson is a Fort Smith, Arkansas native and a proud graduate of Southside High School. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, graduating Cum Laude from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. During his time at the U of A, Dr. Johnson met his wife, Jo Tynon Johnson, who now works as an ER nurse at Baptist Hospital. After completing his undergraduate studies, Dr. Johnson pursued his first passion, working as a Research Process Engineer at E & J Gallo Winery in central California.

While working in California, Dr. Johnson realized his true calling was in dentistry. Coming from a “dental family” deeply rooted in the profession, this transition felt natural. His father, George J. Johnson Jr., has practiced general dentistry in Fort Smith for over 40 years at Willow Creek Dental Clinic, and his brother, Chad Johnson, is an orthodontist in North Carolina. Additionally, his brother-in-law practices general dentistry in Bethel, Alaska.

Determined to pursue his new path, Dr. Johnson attended LSU School of Dentistry in New Orleans, where he earned his Doctorate in Dental Surgery. During his time at LSU, he was an active leader, serving as class president and graduating with honors, ranking fourth in his class. He also gained recognition for his involvement in dental research, presenting his work at conferences in Memphis and Washington, D.C. Dr. Johnson’s exceptional clinical performance earned him several prestigious awards at graduation, including the Southern Academy of Prosthodontics Award, the American Academy of Esthetics Award, and a scholarship from LSU’s Dean, Dr. Henry Gremillion, to attend the Dawson Academy, a renowned institute for advanced dental education.

After dental school, Dr. Johnson completed a year-long Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency in Birmingham, Alabama. During this time, he worked exclusively at the VA Hospital Dental Clinic, providing care for U.S. military veterans. His focus during this residency was on gaining his IV sedation certification and further developing his skills in implantology.

In addition to his passion for dentistry, Dr. Johnson is a proud member of the Arkansas Army National Guard, where he serves as a Major and practices dentistry at Camp Robinson Medical Command in North Little Rock. He also actively contributes to the dental community as a former Secretary of the Fort Smith Dental Association and a member of several organizations, including the Academy of General Dentistry, Arkansas Dental Association, International College of Dentists, and the American Dental Association.

Dr. Johnson returned to Fort Smith in 2013 and joined the River Valley Smile Center team. He also works part-time at his father’s dental practice. As a father of two boys, River and Atlas, Dr. Johnson enjoys spending time with his family, engaging in outdoor activities such as flying his para-glider, vegetable gardening, paddling, fishing, and camping. Despite his travels, he remains a dedicated Razorback fan, supporting his alma mater through thick and thin.

Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth, and they can last for many decades with proper oral hygiene. They are made from titanium alloys, which does not contain nickel and cobalt. This means that they are biocompatible and will not irritate gums. These tooth implants restore tooth functions and aesthetics and promote bone preservation and healing. If you are missing one or multiple of your teeth, dental implants can be the best option. They can also help people who have difficulties masticating, speaking, breathing, and swallowing. Implants can be used to improve patients' oral health, appearance, and quality of life. Implants are false teeth replacements that attach to the gum and bone tissue by means of screws or crowns. The screw is inserted into the jawbone. The crown is attached onto the implant. It is then capped with either a porcelain or porcelain fused to metal crown. There are different kinds of dental implants. Some are more longer lasting while others are less durable. There are two main types of dental implants: the Osseointegrated Dental Implants, and the Endosteal Dental Implants. • Osseointegrated implants use bone to connect to the implant. • Endosteal Implants rely on a separate crown and Artificial Bone. Osseointegrated Dental Implants are popular since they are more effective at restoring teeth that have been lost. They are stronger and look more natural looking than an endosteal implants. The titanium-ceramic dental implants are made of pure Titanium with an outer ceramic or porcelain coat. These implants can replace a single tooth or be used to support implant supported dentures. The titanium-zirconium implants ore dental implants are made using both zirconium and titanium oxide. There are other types of dental implants each designed to serve a specific purpose.

It was so easy to find a doctor and make an appointment. I didn't have to take hours to call different offices and find out who takes my insurance and who doesn't.

I'm a freelancer, so I can't buy insurance easily, so I always ended up paying a lot for doctors' visits. I signed up for a Doctors Network dental plan, and my dental cleanings cost only $25 now. If you don't have dental insurance I highly recommend it.

I fell off my bike and chipped my front tooth. I was able to find and book an appointment online right away. Next time I need an appointment I'll try Doctors Network again.
