Poor oral health doesn’t just mean more cavities and sore gums. The health of your teeth is directly connected to your full body health, and when your teeth suffer, so does your respiratory system, your cognitive function, and even your cardiovascular system. Yes, an inconsistent oral hygiene routine can lead to diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, heart failure, and more. And, in South Carolina, where biscuits and gravy, sweet tea, and lemon cream pie reign supreme, keeping your teeth and gums healthy is key to living a healthy life. We all love a good seafood boil, but toothaches spoil the fun! Talk to your dentist today about how you can achieve a lifetime of healthy smiles.

We could all go for a dip at Folly Beach from time to time, but for your teeth, frequent contact with water is more than just an enjoyable pastime. Staying hydrated is key for maintaining a healthy smile. Why? Because water helps wash away food particles and bacteria stuck between your teeth, around your gums, and on your tongue. Drinking water can increase saliva production, too, which protects teeth from tooth decay. On top of that, fluoride is one of the most important minerals for keeping your tooth enamel strong and preventing cavities, and it’s found in abundance in our water. So, next time you go for a swim, give your teeth the same experience and drink a cool glass of water.

Who is Dr. James Myers DMD?

A proud native of South Carolina, Dr. Jay Myers was born in Spartanburg and spent his early years there before heading to the College of Charleston in 1994. Over two decades later, he has established himself in downtown Charleston with a thriving dental practice, a wonderful wife named Mandy, and three amazing children: Isabel, Avery, and Weston.

It was during his time at the College of Charleston that Dr. Myers realized dentistry was the perfect blend of his passions and talents. He graduated cum laude and continued on to the Medical University of South Carolina, College of Dental Medicine, the following year. Throughout his four years at MUSC, he developed a particular interest in cosmetic dentistry, earning the prestigious Award for Excellence in Cosmetic Dentistry—an honor bestowed on only one graduating senior each year.

After graduating, Dr. Myers began his career in a large dental practice in Charlotte, NC, but he eagerly returned to the Lowcountry when an opportunity arose. He spent five years in Summerville before acquiring his current practice in historic downtown Charleston. Cannon Park Dental, nestled conveniently between his two alma maters, reflects his vision of personalized patient care and offers a distinctive ‘boutique dental’ experience.

Dr. Myers is passionate about the growing connection between oral health and overall wellness. He emphasizes that poor dental care can lead to serious health issues, including preventable conditions that may shorten lives. While achieving that perfect smile is important, today’s dentistry also highlights the significant impact an unhealthy mouth can have on the entire body. He encourages everyone to see an oral healthcare provider twice a year, as it could truly make a difference in their health.

Above all, Dr. Myers cherishes his role as a husband and father. He considers parenting his greatest joy and strives to create a family-oriented atmosphere at Cannon Park Dental. Patients who visit Dr. Myers and his dedicated team quickly feel like part of the family, finding a warm and welcoming home in their dental care experience.

What are dental dentures?

p
panoramic-shooter-573

Dentures, often referred to as dental dentures, are removable prosthetic devices used to restore or replace missing teeth and surrounding soft tissues. They are custom-designed to fit a person's own mouth and restore both the looks and functionality of natural teeth. Dentures can be an acceptable option for individuals who have lost a few or all of their teeth due to many reasons, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or trauma (injury). There are the main types of dentures: 1. Complete Dentures: These are made whenever all natural teeth are missing in either the lower or upper jaw, or both. Complete dentures consist of a full set of artificial teeth secured on an acrylic base that mimics the looks and color of the gums. They are held in place through suction (surface tension) or denture adhesives. 2. Partial Dentures: They are utilized when at least a few natural teeth remain in the jaw. Partial dentures consist of fake teeth attached to a metal or acrylic framework that is secured with metal clasps onto the existing teeth. They help fill in gaps (empty spaces) and prevent the remaining natural teeth from moving and shifting. Key points regarding dentures: • Customization: Dentures are crafted to match the shape, size, and color of the individual's natural teeth closely for a natural-looking smile. • Adjustments: It may take time for patients to get used to wearing dentures. Multiple follow-up and adjustments with the dentist are common to ensure appropriate fit and comfort. • Care: Dentures require regular cleanings to maintain oral hygiene. They should not be worn at nights and soaked in a denture solution or water. • Lifespan: Changes in the jawbone and gum tissue over time can affect the retention of dentures. Dentures usually need to be relined (re-based), or replaced periodically. Dentures provide a functional and somewhat cosmetic solution for patients with missing teeth. They allow them to eat, speak, and smile with confidence. It's crucial to consult with a dentist to determine the best type of denture based on individual needs and oral health situation.

It was so easy to find a doctor and make an appointment. I didn't have to take hours to call different offices and find out who takes my insurance and who doesn't.

I'm a freelancer, so I can't buy insurance easily, so I always ended up paying a lot for doctors' visits. I signed up for a Doctors Network dental plan, and my dental cleanings cost only $25 now. If you don't have dental insurance I highly recommend it.
